Why do words end in ness

Click to expand Andygc said:. To pick up on what PaulQ said, I think it's all the more confusing to me because there are words in -ness that are perfectly proper natural-sounding English, like "happiness" or "cleverness", and it's hard to distinguish between "official" words in ness that are commonly used, and made-up words..

Sorry, Julie, but they aren't the same, even though there is overlap. Here's the OED's primary definitions, which I didn't need to look up to understand the difference: calm, n. Stillness, quiet, tranquillity, serenity; freedom from agitation or disturbance. Free from agitation or disturbance; quiet, still, tranquil, serene; without wind, not stormy. The state or quality of being calm; stillness, tranquillity, quietness.

Native language: English BrE. Similarly, "quietness" does not mean "quiet", it means the state or condition of being quiet. Dictionaries can help but they don't tell you exactly how often a word is used.

If you know one that is more accurate when it comes to that, I'd be interested in knowing which one it is In addition, there aren't a lot of nouns in English, so to French speakers, the temptation is strong to use -ness words to get across or translate the words that lack.

My point is that quietness means among other things the state of being quiet, but quiet noun does not mean the state of being quiet adjective. In addition, there aren't a lot of nouns in English , so to French speakers, the temptation is strong to use -ness words to get across or translate the words that lack. I probably didn't express myself very clearly.
